5 Home Cleaning Mistakes to Avoid

Having a tough time cleaning windows? You might be making the simple task harder than it actually is. The cleaning mistakes listed below could be making your house dirtier.

1. Using Just One Washcloth to Clean the Entire House

It’s best to use a separate washcloth for cleaning a specific area of your home. Using a different washcloth can help prevent contamination, not to mention the unsightly streaks during window cleaning.

2. Spritzing Cleaning Solution Directly Onto the Surface

Spritzing the cleaner directly onto the surface of your furniture and window glass will only make wooden furniture greasy and leave white streaks on your windows. Dust and dirt can mix with the cleaning solution, creating stubborn stains. To prevent hard-to-remove stains from forming, spritz a bit of cleaning solution on the washcloth first and then wipe your furniture and windows.

If there are already stubborn stains on your windows, it’s best to let the professionals handle window cleaning. The internal components of your window could get damaged if you press too hard.

3. Using a Feather Duster

Feather dusters spread dust around your home instead of removing it. Use a microfiber cleaning cloth instead for a more efficient clean.

4. Putting Kitchen Tools Directly Into the Dishwasher

Speaking of inefficient cleaning, don’t use your dishwasher to clean kitchen tools—it might not be enough to remove the bits of food stuck in your cheese grater or zester. Instead, wash them by hand with dish soap and warm water. Make sure to pay attention to the small holes to prevent mold from forming on your kitchen tools.

5. Washing a Cutting Board Using Dish Soap

Unfortunately, in the case of your cutting board, dish soap and warm water aren’t enough. You’ll need a stronger solution, like hydrogen peroxide or bleach, to remove food particles.

Don’t Forget About Your Exterior

Keeping your interior clean can help maintain indoor comfort, but don’t forget about your exterior, which is responsible for protecting your interior from the elements. In particular, your gutter system protects your roof, your home’s first line of defense against moisture, by diverting rainwater away, which is why routine gutter cleaning is important.

However, a lot of homeowners just don’t have the time for a tedious task like gutter cleaning. A possible solution? Let a professional gutter cleaning company do the work for you.
