Gutter cleaning is an inconvenient but necessary task that every homeowner must do in order to keep their homes in top shape. After all, gutters are the components of the home that prevent rainwater from damaging your siding, roofing, landscaping and, most importantly, the foundation. Unfortunately, there are some homeowners that only maintain their gutters once a year and there are many reasons why you shouldn’t do this.
In this post, Sunco Window Cleaning LLC discusses the five common reasons why you need to maintain your gutters year round.
Gutter Size – If you live in an area with a wetter than average climate, then you need to check on your gutters every now and then, especially during a strong storm. You may find that your gutters can’t handle the rate of water flow and that water is actually spilling into the ground. If this is the case, consider having your smaller gutters replaced with larger ones to help it cope with the amount of water.
Debris – Whether they’re leaves, seeds, twigs or pine needles, debris will always find a way to get in your gutters no matter what season it is. Unfortunately, if you realize too late that your gutters are blocked by debris, it can spell bad news for you as the water it catches will likely overflow. Therefore, always have a gutter and roof cleaning professional clear your gutters of debris every now and then to prevent this issue.
Age – On the other hand, if you moved into a home with old gutters, you might want to get them replaced as soon as you can. The reason for this is because the gutters are most likely made up of segments that are joined together at the seams and attached with screws. This can collect water that can’t escape, which leads to mold growth that can spread to the roof. Alternatively, you can also fill any small holes with caulk if you don’t want to have them replaced yet.
Foundation – By having your gutters maintained every now and then for the entire year, you’re also protecting your home’s foundations. If your gutters are blocked and the clog isn’t removed immediately, the water that spills over from the gutters can pool along the foundation and put pressure on the foundation walls that can damage the structure via cracks.
Granules – Believe it or not, the granules in your asphalt roof can actually affect your gutters. As time goes by, these granules can separate from the shingles and fall in your gutters. This is bad news as it can accumulate and trap leaves and twigs that can cause drainage issues in the system. Therefore, keep in mind to clean the gutters quarterly or install a gutter guard to prevent the asphalt granules from falling in.
